Foodcapades: Rescue Doggy's Dishes

Being a rescue doggy is hard! Molly has definitely had some scary things in her past, and you're never quite sure when they'll show themselves. Well, we found an interesting (but mild) one.

New Toy For Christmas

I bought Molly a new toy. She deserves a little spoiling for being such a good doggy this year. It's a Kong rubber bone that has two little treat holding spots at the ends.

Little Beggars!

This morning I had a biscuit with grape jelly on it. Molly was riveted... but surprisingly, so was Ana! Shameless little beggars, how we love you. Too bad for you both that it was people-food.

New Trick

Here are some photos of Molly doing her new trick. She looks a lot more graceful in a still photo. Excuse the messy carpet. Apparently it's time to vacuum again.

Poised for the trick:

Up we go!

Doggy Coat

We picked up a coat for Molly. It's a thinly padded windbreaker, reflective stripes, with a velcro strap around her neck and another around the barrel of her body. She is tolerant of it but refuses to break out in a full run in it. She periodically peers over her shoulders and glares at it. After we take it off, she shakes her whole body and proceeds to straighten her fur. Prissy girl. ;-)

As for new tricks...she's slowly learning to sit up on her hind legs for treats via command and hand gesture. Her front legs pinwheel in the air and it's usually less than graceful but it's always adorable. She's also got a much better grasp of the stairs now and follows Jason up and down them wherever he goes. I can't wait to get her out on an agility track but am letting her get comfy here before pushing her to a new realm.

Small Update on Molly

Molly did very well at Thanksgiving. She was a little confused when her people slept in much later than usual. She likes telling us to get up by standing two inches from our sleeping face and pelting us with kisses. And then another roadtrip! We went up to my family's home and everyone cooed over her. She did tricks for my mom in exchange for nibbles of white meat turkey. Mmm human food is a wonderful thing!

We had our first snow with her this morning. She doesn't mind it really..periodically shaking the crystals off her fur. I can't wait to have a deep enough pile for her to run through it. It looks like she's developing a good winter coat. I'm still tempted to get her a doggy coat but she likely wouldn't be thrilled with it.

Stairy Conundrum

Stairs.

Love 'em or hate 'em, they've become a regular part of Molly's life.

The first couple days, Molly was excited but nervous to do what the people were doing. She would hesitantly go up three quarters of the stairs, get bold, decide she'd mastered this feat, and attempt to rush the last few stairs (every time), resulting in her tripping herself. Hmm, stairs *can* hurt.

Then, the third or fourth day, she gave up. I went to lead her up the stairs, and she planted her butt and muled on me, refusing to go. Even a stern look and a sharp word didn't break her out of it, but she wasn't spooked, just being stubborn. She got picked up off the ground entirely. That tactic will not work for her. I was careful not to hold her in a way that would be painful, but I didn't coddle her, either, so she couldn't think of it as an improvement. I clearly wasn't happy, and when we reached the top of the stairs she apologized to me in her doggy way.

Now we've come to the point where we can see a conundrum in her head. She *wants* to go up/down the stairs, but she vaguely recalls not liking something about them. It's a scary stair conundrum. Say that quickly ten times.

After picking her up and being unhappy with her, she compromised the very next time. We may have to change it on her later, but for the moment it works. If we walk with her, side by side, she'll slowly go up or down the stairs (more worried about up, but she's still dainty about down, too). If we get ahead of her, we become The Big Person On The Stair, and she puts on the brakes, and if she starts up the stairs but we're not walking with her, she'll gladly stop and wait. For now, it's, "We'll do this together."

Silly dog!
